Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the purpose of websites and the laws and guidelines that concern their development
  2. Understand the principles of multiple page website design
  3. Be able to create a multiple page website

Scenario

You have been employed as a junior web developer for the Travel and Tourism web design company. They have asked you to review some of the websites they already have for clients to see if these sites meet the needs of clients, users and audience and to suggest improvements to them.

On completion of this review they would then like you to design a small website for one of their clients – the Spilsby tourism promotion group.

Throughout the assignment your work will need a header with “BTEC ICT    Unit 4 and the task no.” and a footer with “your name, the date and the page no on it”. It must be 25% gray

All work must be produced in Times new roman font size 12 and must be saved in folders, files must be named using accepted protocols for naming files and all work must be backed up in a separate folder.

Task 1

P1 Describe 4 different purposes of websites

M1 Explain how designers use different construction features

D1 Justify the use of different construction features

From your knowledge of websites select 4 different purposes of a website and give one example of a website designed for that purpose (P1). Explain (M1) the features in the construction of that site that help it achieve its purpose and justify (part 1 of D1) how the features help the user find and use information on the page.

Construction features that you need to consider are:

Frames, Action Buttons, hyperlinks, image links, hotspots, download speeds, interactive features eg searching, on line forms, email, registration, logins

Task 2

P1 Describe 4 different purposes of websites

P2 Review 4 different websites noting whether they have achieved their purpose

M2 Identify and explain suggestions that could be implemented to improve 2 websites

Select 4 sites of different purpose

For each website say what the purpose of the site (P1) is and whether they have achieved this through the design of the site (P2) e.g. if the purpose was to gain members to a group how have they made this easy – have they got an online form?

You also need to take into account target/user need, suitability of language, choice of image, appropriate formats (layout, colour and font) Use screenshots to illustrate the good and bad points

Select two of the sites and make suggestions of ways in which the site may be improved (M2) You may use examples from other sites or diagrams to explain your answers.

P2, M2

Task 3

P3 Design and create a multipage website

D1 Justify the use of different construction features

Create a multiple page website designed to match the needs of the client (P3) .  The client is the Spilsby Tourism development group.  Their aim is to increase the number of people visiting Spilsby and the surrounding area.  You must make sure that the website is appropriate for the defined audiences and that you design a website that is relevant to their needs which are:

Design you site using the tools you have been shown.

You must use the correct web design rules, use logical folders and file names, save images correctly i.e. an image of Skegness Beach should be saved as SkegnessBeach (screen shots of files and folders will create evidence of this)

You must combine information from different sources i.e. ICT and Non ICT sources, use original artwork, clipart, photos

You must take regular screenshots of your design as you build it and annotate these to show why you have selected certain features and how these will meet the needs of the client, user and audience (part 2 of D1). Also include improvements you have made, errors you have corrected as you have progressed though the task.

P3, D1

Task 4

P4 Upload and maintain a multipage website

Upload your website onto the school intranet (upload for P4).  Create a simple step by step guide for people new to website design of how you do this

Update your website every week and take screenshots of changes made and keep these in a (log) diary format showing that you have checked for errors (maintain for P4).

Check your completed website for the following:

Make sure all files and folders are correctly named and that you have deleted or moved any non relevant files from your Website Folder

P4

Task 5

P5 Describe 3 situations a web designer could be in breach of the law

M3 Describe the use of interactive websites

Design a leaflet for other people new to web site design outlining the laws and guidelines surrounding webpage design (P5). The laws you need to focus on are:

The Data Protection Act 1998

The Computer Misuse Act

The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988

Digital Millennium Copyright Act 2000

The Child Protection Act

The Race Relations Act

Sex Discrimination Act

Equal Opportunities Act

Disability Discrimination Act

And Libel

In the leaflet describe three different situations where you could have been in breach of the law.

Design a help sheet for the tourism group which explains “interactivity” for members of the group who are not familiar with this term and what it means (M3).

Give a definition of interactivity

Give examples of how it is used on websites and say why it might be beneficial.

Describe techniques used to provide interactivity and give examples from existing websites using screenshots and giving links to these examples.

Task 6 (D2)

D2 Evaluate the benefits of using HTML in website creation

You have to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of learning and using HTML (code) as apposed to only using wizards to generate web pages.

Write an article to be included in a specialist computing magazine describing the advantages of being able to write HTML code as apposed to using a web design software package such as Macromedia Dreamweaver or Microsoft Front Page. You must also include the disadvantages for each. (D2)
